As we move on from the pandemic fuelled working landscape, how do we set ourselves apart from the tech competition?
The working world has long since become a digital one. No matter where you work, no matter which sector of industry you occupy, it will require some degree of digital understanding. From manufacturing to farming to teaching to tourism – all of it requires a degree of IT mastery. Gone are the days when a basic comprehension of Word was enough to earn you a place on the internet. Nowadays, you need to know as many software systems as possible if you want to set yourself apart from the four thousand other people who have the same degree as you.
Let’s talk about how we set ourselves apart from others when we are applying for tech, IT, and software focused positions. Gen Z have already missed out on two years’ worth of promotions and potential opportunities. Let’s not waste any more time.
Tech is Constantly Evolving
The world of technology is constantly evolving and the sooner you accept this, the richer it can make you. Tech doesn’t stand still for long. New innovators and inventors are constantly releasing bigger and better products. You only have to remember Vine or Myspace to understand that a digital platform won’t be around forever. Even Google will eventually have had its day.
Because of this consistent evolution of tech and IT, we need to stay on our toes as the potential workforce. There is a digital skills gap which is putting a damper on things across the board at the moment. If you can fulfil some of the roles that companies currently need, while simultaneously studying hard to stay abreast of new developments, you can become the kind of technological whizz-kid that companies snap up. How do you do it? You have to live and breathe your field.
How to Land Software Roles?
In among all the constantly evolving tech, you still have to be savvy enough to land yourself a job. How do you do it? You let your training take the following format.
Start with a university degree in computing, business, or finance. You will need a tech aspect as your main focus of study. The point is that you apply your own unique set of skills to an aspect of the tech working world that you can excel in. Hays Technology is a good place to browse for potential future job roles if you need inspiration.
Next, as you study or after you graduate, you start studying individual software systems. Don’t sit still, evolve with that tech world. Teach yourself how to deal with spreadsheets and databases, how to write applications and how to code. Teach yourself how to build a website, how to maintain social media channels, and how to create content that sets you apart. The more strings you have on this digital bow, the better.
You see, you and five other people from your course could all go for the same job. What sets you apart are your extraneous skills. If those skills are program based? Then you already have this in the bag.
